New Game Server

Our brand new game server is being built by Dell, and will be arriving in May!

I won't give any exact dates, since I don't want to compromise the security of the delivery, but within 2-3 weeks our awesome new Poweredge R240 will be operational.

6C/12T Xeon Processor (3.8Ghz clock speed)
128GB DDR4 RAM
1TB SSD + 4TB 7200 SATA HDD

Gigabit fiber WAN connection/SFP 10Gbe LAN.

It will be just like the other rack server (what the site runs on) just 8x the specs.

The bottom server on this rack:

Damn that is one hell of a rig. I assume it will run more than one game server, but what if you did use it for actual gaming :O that'd be intense.

Very good specifications on that hardware! Probably dwarfs all my machines put together :money:

Will be worth it in the long run with all the money saved on paying hosting providers. That adds up quick.

In it's out of the rack configuration, it wouldn't be that great for gaming. Although it's hardware specs are great, there is no graphics card, no audio card and no KVM dedicated to the system. Also, the Server OS' are not supported by most applications (such as steam, games) and would not be able to run.

We actually do all of our hosting on premises, web/database/AD/games. Works out great though.

Only improvement I plan to make is having one or more staff members host a slave replica in case the primary location ever goes down longer than battery backups will last.

Dell R230 is currently running virtual machines that handle:

1) SQL Server Database (8GB RAM allocated, 4 Cores)
2) Shared Hosting Webserver (2GB RAM, 2 Cores)
3) BFG's VPS Webserver (8GB RAM, 4 Cores)
4) Active Directory DC/DNS (2GB RAM, 2 Cores)
5) Other VMs (12GB)

Dell T130 is running backup features for AD/DNS, voice servers, and a handful of dedicated game servers.

New server will be entirely dedicated to hosting game servers.

Also, a T40 microserver will be our off-site backup which one of the staff members will be hosting. It will have fail-over capabilities, to ensure up-time and reliability for the core networking & web service capabilities.

Nice server! Just curious but what all games do you plan on running or are open to running? Someone posted about getting a SWAT4 or SWAT3 (or both) server up and I know at least a handful of friends who play too.

good specs, on the server. I used to run a COD 1 clan and bbs from a home server with a P2 433mhz :P

this towers over that one

Well, depending on your WAN connection speeds and overall traffic levels of the website, that could actually work.

Of course if you are serving anything other than static HTML to a limited number of users (say, <1000 daily) it'd likely be too much for it. And if, as you say, you were running a BBS/Board/Forum/Community that used a modern database backend (SQL Server/MySQL) then you'd need something with a good amount of RAM and a faster processor.
